The basics are that you have to hit your object ball and knock any ball to a rail ( or pocket it ) otherwise it is a foul.
If a foul occurs then the opponent has "ball-in-hand" .. meaning he can pick up the ball and position it anywhere he would like to on the table.
You can't double-hit the cue ball.
